Dry Needling & Hypermobility

Let’s dive deeper into dry needling with electrical stimulation for hypermobility.

Are you struggling with constant joint and muscle pain or spasms. You know you’re supposed to exercise but you are having a difficult time finding exercises that work for your body? Does anyone ever seem shocked by how flexible you are or are you doing party tricks like showing everyone that your thumb can touch your forearm?

There is a wide spectrum of hypermobility syndromes and a lot of them are often left undiagnosed, unless you have family history or know what to look for. Clinically, I see a lot of our clients with hypermobility that have muscle spasms or feel like their muscles are tight and guarded. Understandably, their initial thought is to try to stretch that muscle out. But…what if the reason your muscles are tight and guarded is to help protect that lack of stability of your joints?

In that case, stretching just lead to further muscular guarding and pain. Enter dry needling to relieve that muscular tension, trigger points and knots without overstretching already loose ligaments and connective tissue.

Clinically, I’ve found that trigger point dry needling in combination with electrical stimulation can be beneficial in eliminating some of the post-needling soreness, as well as preventing further tissue irritability or pain that can sometimes be present with traditional dry needling “pistoning” techniques.

If you’ve tried dry needling in the past with poor results, maybe the technique was just not the correct one for your body. Trigger point dry needling with electrical stimulation can help “reset” the muscle to relieve some of the pain and guarding and then we can focus on stability exercises and movements to maintain long-term stability to improve overall health and reach your goals. Stretching is not always the answer for tight muscles when they are protecting looser joints and connective tissues!
